Why Choose Us?

  • As a mutual building society we are run entirely for the benefit of our members. Unlike plc banks, we don’t have to divert valuable resources and profits in order to provide dividends for external shareholders.
  • Over the last 5 years (2003 – 2007), Dunfermline Building Society has returned almost £70 million of ‘mutuality benefit’ to our members. This is the difference between our interest rate margin and that of high street plc banks. For example, in 2007, our interest rate margin was 0.98% compared to nearly 2.00% for plc banks.
  • The Building Societies Association’s view is that by operating on narrower margins, building societies like the Dunfermline, overall, offer lower mortgage rates and higher savings rates than plc banks.
  • Our people know that when they serve a customer they are serving one of the owners of the business. We believe this ensures we are much closer to members’ needs and aspirations and creates a completely different culture in building societies compared with institutions owned by shareholders.
  • Since biennial customer satisfaction surveys began in 2001, Dunfermline Building Society has been within the top 8% of all companies surveyed. And in the most recent survey (June 2007), we achieved a rating that put us in the top 6% of all companies.

  • We can influence, favourably, the pricing policy of our competitors.  For example, pressure from building societies has prevented banks charging fees for access to cash machines.
  • Building societies can take into account much longer-term issues when determining corporate strategy than institutions constantly under pressure to deliver rising dividends and a rising share price.
  • Dunfermline Building Society is a community–based organisation, serving our members both locally and nationally. We believe that part of our social responsibility is to contribute to local communities. We have made a significant and continuous investment across Scotland through sponsorship and support to various organisations.
